Last week 5 Italian chefs got together to break the world record for the world’s largest pizza.
The team was led by Dovillo Nardi and Dr. Schar a company that produces gluten free food and as a result the world’s largest pizza is also gluten free.
The pizza is gluten free to bring awareness to celiac disease, the most frequent food intolerance worldwide. According to recent data coming from the 2011 report of the Italian Department of Health, there are currently over 135,000 people officially diagnosed with celiac disease in Italy and the number of diagnoses are growing rapidly.
The 40m pizza was made with 8.6 tons of flour, 4.5 tons of tomato sauce, 4 tons of mozzarella, 680 kg’s of margarine, 250kg of salt, 100 kg’s of lettuce and 23 kg’s of vinegar. The pizza weighed in at a massive 23 tons.
The five chefs spent more than two days baking the dough in over 2 ton batches.
The Pizza has been named “Ottavia”, a word of Roman origin for “eighth son”, as a homage to the first Roman emperor Octavian Augustus, who represented an epoch making change in the history of Rome and brought the Empire into a period of economic and cultural unrest.
The previous record was held by Norwood Pick’n Pay Hypermarket in South Africa who set the record in 1990, during the days when South Africa would desperately be trying to prove it’s worth to the world, with a 12 ton, 37 meter pizza.
So Pick’n Pay, its over to you… will you respond?
South Africa’s reputation is at stake!
