A 220kg Bluefin Tuna sells for $1.76 million at the Tsukiji Fish Market Auction in Tokyo.
Bluefin Tuna is prized for it’s tender pink meat which adorns sushi carousels around the world and can sell for over $20 per portion at upmarket sushi bars.
The winning bid was made by Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura Co. who said “the price was a bit high,” but that he wanted to “encourage Japan,” according to Kyodo News agency. He was planning to serve the fish to customers later Saturday.
The species which is listed as endangered by SASSI and environmental agencies around the world is eaten primarily in Japan which accounts for 80% of the worldwide Bluefin Tuna catch and consumption.
Stocks of all three bluefin species, the Pacific, Southern and Atlantic have fallen over the past 15 years due to overfishing.
