The South African edition of the Global Pizza Challenge to kick of in Cape Town on May 15th to 17th May at Hostex in Cape Town
Since 2009, aspiring pizza makers from across the globe have tantalised the taste buds of our international panel of judges, and delighted thousands with their delectable pizzas creations. Pizza is undoubtedly a firm favourite around the world and The Global Pizza Challenge was founded to promote and encourage culinary innovation within the world’s most popular food sector – pizza.
From humble beginnings, The Global Pizza Challenge has developed into the planet’s biggest pizza competition; as national winners are selected to compete in the International Final. Now in its forth successful year, organisers are keen to see passionate, independent pizza makers demonstrate their gastronomic masterpieces first-hand during the competition’s national cook-off.
This year’s event will see more than 16 countries entering the race; and in 2012 the new Global Pizza Champion will be crowned.
The competition has been running for three years in South Africa and the 2011 edition was won by MasterChef Judge, Peter Goffe-Wood. He won the with a Cape Malay inspired Ostrich Bobotie pizza on a pale ale base and home made peach chutney and Tomato Pronto chakalaka sauce. He walked away from the competition with a G3 Ferrari Pizza oven and a trip to Sydney to represent South Africa in the Global Pizza Challenge Finals.
Arnold Tanzer, co-owner, competition judge and executive producer of MasterChef SA said, “Pete’s pizza was a true reflection of local taste, flavour and culture. It was well balanced from its thin base and ratio of topping components to its final sprinkling of Buffalo Ridge Mozzarella and Bandini Mozzarella.
In light of the current culinary revolution that is sweeping across South Africa we are expecting another South African inspired pizza recipe to take top honour this year.
