The Test Kitchen has been raking in the awards both locally and internationally since it opened in November 2010.
The Cape Town restaurant located in the very fashionable Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock was opened by Luke Dale Roberts following his departure from La Colombe, a restaurant he had guided to 12th place in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards 2010 and the title of Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Africa and Middle East.
Time magazine pin pointed the date November 24, 2010, as the day “Woodstock officially became Cape Town’s hottest district…when Luke Dale-Roberts opened The Test Kitchen there.”
Luke won the award as Eat Out Chef of the Year in 2011 while his restaurant came in second place behind The Greenhouse. In 2012 he topped that achievement by being voted the Eat Out Best Restaurant in South Africa 2012 along with being ranked 74th in the World by the San Pellegrino Best Resaturants earlier in the year.
Dale says that he is preparing food that he never dreamt that he would be doing in South Africa but peoples palates have evolved so much.
The global foodie scene has just exploded and I think South Africa has just been drawn into that
Speaking to the Daily Maverick earlier in the year following his recognition by San Pellegrino, Dale-Roberts sighed when asked to define his style of cooking.
I suppose it’s modern global cuisine, but mainly it’s what I’m busy thinking of at that particular time. It can’t really be put in a box.
Today he says that his food is more conceptual, creative and controversial and that the creative process has to come from the heart and that you have to run with your idea’s.
My job now is about running a great restaurant, cooking great food and as much if not more than that its about creating opportunity for the new generation of chefs.
