Tongue eating fish louse are not generally the kind of thing one likes to find crawling around in ones dinner.
This is what happened to Belfast man Rick Beattie when it came to preparing his fish.
He was cleaning the fish and shook it by the tail when the louse popped out of the fish’s mouth.
Mr Beattie said:
It was like something from a horror film. I’ve contacted Tesco and they’ve apologised and promised me a refund.
The fish in question had been infiltrated by a tongue eating parasite, less commonly known as Cymothoa exigua. The parasite enters a fish through its gills and attaches itself to the tongue upon which it begins to feast, ultimately replacing it becoming the new tounge.
The Gou’ld like parasite (Stargate), Cymothoa exigua is not believed to be dangerous to humans but they can bite.
Mr Beattie recieved a refund from Tesco’s with a company spokesman saying that they will undertake “an urgent and thorough investigation” of the fish’s supplier,
