Smoke Sweat and Tears were ambitious in there choice of dish for the Ultimate Braai Master SASSI challenge but did enough to see them through to the next round.

They went with a garlic mash which raised eyebrows from judge Bertus Basson questioning if they had enough time, only 45 minutes, to get it done.

They served the judges marinated tuna with a citrus salad for the raw dish and tuna cutlets on garlic mash for cooked.

Those raised eyebrows certainly spurred Chris Kastern and Simon Good on to get everything done on time.

Bertus Basson was quite straightforward in his assessment.

Although it’s ugly, it’s tasty… very cool.

With that they were through to the next round.

Smoke Sweat and Tears had been impressed with the pineapple and baked custard served at the Ultimate Braai Master welcome dinner.

They’d had a little chat with Kate George and Jonno Proudfoot of Coal Play about it, finding out how it was done.

Kate told them that you place the mould in water and bring to the boil over a fire with Jonno sharing some of his expert knowledge by informing Chris Kastern and Simon Good that by boiling in water the temperature will never go above 100°C ensuring that you’re able to manage the temperature properly.

They have definitely come in to Ultimate Braai Master with the attitude that they have a lot to learn.

The presented the judges with a white bean soup, Springbok loin and the pineapple and custard dessert.

The Springbok was a bit overdone and some of the veg was undercooked leading Bertus to say;

Hopefully they’ll learn how to control their fire a bit better.

They did enough to stay out of trouble and no doubt learned quite bit during the challenge.

It was the Boerie Brothers who failed to impress in this group joining Team Spectacular and Darkies Unleashed in the elimination challenge.

Chris entered Ultimate Braai Master last year, but didn’t make it to the audition rounds. If they win, they want to use some of the cash to travel and braai with 20 of their friends.

It was a windy day in Port Elizabeth as the Ultimate Braai Master auditions got under way.

Nine teams made it through to the second day of competition bringing the total number of teams from which the final 15 will be selected to 31.

The PE Teams who made it through to day 2 are, in no particular order:
1. Braai-O-Holics
2. The Wild Ones
3. BBB
4. West Coast Bros
5. Elephant Spitbraai
6. Coal Play
7. Smoke, Sweat & Tears
8. Huiskombuis Boys
9. Smith & Krohn

It was not all clean sailing in the windy city though as some of the locals were a little put out when some of those who failed at the Cape Town auditions arrived to try again in Port Elizabeth.

Tarryn in particular made her feelings known on the Ultimate Braai Master Facebook page.

Despite the unrest in some quarters of Port Elizabeth the food on display looked great, we like the look of the bacon wrapped asparagus.

Justin Bonello was always on hand keeping an eye on the proceedings.

The last round of auditions take place in Johannesburg next week, after that the 15 finalists will be told to go and prepare for the trip of a lifetime.

Ultimate Braai Master is due to screen on SABC 3 in September 2013.
