In what was one of the toughest challenges yet on MasterChef SA, Lungile Nhlanhla failed to get it right.

Khaya Silingile must have been kicking herself when she saw the episode sixteen challenge having won an earlier round with a Chicken Ballotine recipe.

Lungile Nhlanhla on the other hand must be kicking herself for not paying enough attention to her mousse which was nothing short of a complete disaster.

Lungile arrived on the show as a young contender with a lot to prove and as she so rightly said she leaves “knowing that she is recognised as a cook” and as a mature young woman who has just completed a road of amazing self discovery.

She has a lot to be proud of having won a round with her Pig Tails in episode seven of MasterChef SA and went from strength to strength in the following episodes as her confidence grew and her natural culinary talent developed.

Lungile’s inability to get her mousse to set was of great disappointment to Michel Roux Jr, who rates the MasterChef SA kitchen the best he has seen, as he liked her combination of cauliflower and truffle and was really looking forward to tasting it.

Sadly however it was missing from her final presentation, it all leaked out.

It was Deena Naidoo, who once again displayed immense character when under incredible pressure, that walked away with the prize, an advice bell that he can use to call upon the judges to help him out in the next round of MasterChef SA.

Deena was in complete and utter awe of Michel Roux Jr, whose presence brought all of the contestants to tears, shocked to hear that they would be learning from and cooking for the famous and well respected chef.

He applied himself diligently to the task at hand and prepared a dish that was roundly applauded by all of the judges.

Michel Roux Jr liked the combination of pistachio, truffle and artichoke.

Sarel on the other hand got it all wrong with the pepperdews and could well have been facing elimination if it was not for Lungile’s technical failure in the elimination challenge.

She has shown incredible versatility during the show and could very well go all the way.

A pregnant Khaya Silingile crushes the MasterChef SA opposition with her cranking skills

The MasterChef SA contestants got to test their culinary talents on the spice island of Zanzibar in episode thirteen of the competition.

The challenge was to prepare 50 servings of Zanzibari cuisine and set up their stall at the famous Forodhani Gardens night market, where they would be selling their creations to the locals and tourists alike.

Whichever team sold the most food would win, it was as simple as that, “The Apprentice” meets “MasterChef”.

As the contestants drew coloured nails to form the teams it was looking like it would be the men against the women except that their is one extra woman in the competition and it was Sue-Ann Allen who ended up with the guys.

The teams then headed off into the market to begin planning and their menus and to buy the ingredients.

Blue Team: Sarel Loots, Deena Naidoo, Thys Hattingh, Sue-Ann Allen

They all looked very conspicuous as they wondered around the busy market in their red and blue aprons with camera’s following them everywhere.

When they entered the fish market Khaya looked as though she was taking a turn for he worse as the smell of all the fish began to make her tummy turn.

It had good reason to as Khaya proudly announced that she was pregnant. That must have given the producers a little scare and yes, for those of you have been searching for the answer on Google, Khaya is married.

Having a bun in the oven was not going to slow Khaya down though as the teams managed their tables in the night market with the ladies Red Team getting one over on the men’s (plus Sue-Ann) Blue Team by offering their customers sugar cane juice on the menu.

Khaya got to work on the juice pressing machine, which looked as though it was a relic from the industrial revolution, and cranked that baby up with such vigour leaving the blue team red faced for not having any juice on their menu.

Deena got to work to try and rectify the problem but it was too little too late as the ladies crushed the Blue Team by  218 000 Shillings to 75 000.

Lungile Nhlanhla showed South Africa exactly what she is capable of as the talented young fashion graduate made the most of a bad situation in the pork pressure challenge with her pig tails recipe. Many of the MasterChef contestants, Lungile included, looked disapprovingly at the limited range of options being made available to them by the MasterChef judges. The episode had already had a slight twist to the tale by having the losing team rate their team members on a scale of one to seven to determine the pecking order when it came to choosing which pork cut they would work with. The choices were not easy consisting of, pigs ears, trotters, loin, shoulder, cheek, belly and tails.

Lungile’s task was made even harder by the fact that she had been rated third last by her fellow Red Team members and had a choice of either the tail, shoulder or the cheek. What was only known to Lungile however is that this moment had already been predicted by her mother who had told her that one day she will meet the kind of man who’s not interested in the prime cuts but tripe and offal so she must know how to cook them.

What really made Lungile’s recipe rock was the Ugege (steamed bread) which made the whole dish a finger licking experience which would strike at Benny Masekwamang’s heart as he announced to Lungile that he is “that kind of man” and his dinner had been served.

This really was a stunning victory for Lungile who had not been rated highly by her fellow Red Team contestants and has never been an early pick in the team challenges.

Home town decision leaves Blue Team in the cold

Despite Lungile doing a remarkable job with the Ostrich Crostini the Blue Team led by Manisha Naidu lost out to Samantha Nolan’s Red Team in the episode five Harvest Challenge.

Lungile did enough to keep Manisha happy as she chose Berdina Schurink and Mmutsi Maseko to face the elimination pressure test with her.

Lungile Nhlanhla is a  21 year old fashion graduate from Durban

One of the youngest competitors in the Top 18, Lungi is a graduate from UKZN who wants to create a link between her two big passions: food and fashion. She has a great acumen for food and says she enjoys the way her food makes others feel. A fan of fresh (and raw) fish, Lungi likes to take risks with her cooking: “putting a new spin” on it.
