Thinus Els clashes with Greg Gilowey and comes last on Ultimate Braai Master

In a somewhat timid start to the much anticipated Ultimate Braai Master Thinus Els and Lekitlane Mokiti make an early exit.

For the first episode of Ultimate Braai Master the contestants headed up to the Orange River and the Felix Unite River Camp where they were to take on the role of river guides.

The teams were split into three groups and had to paddle down stream for 4 hours before they could even begin braaing.

The challenge was to cook a three course braai, just like the river guides do when they are out on the water with their adventure tourists.

Team leaders were appointed before they began their journey and they had to decide as to what the menu would be with just 5 minutes to fetch all the ingredients from the pantry then load them up into the canoes and head downstream.

Warwick Thomas (Fat Cow) took the leadership reins for one team, Greg Gilowey (Rust n Dust) another and seasoned safari guide Maudie Bleach (Which Way Braai Chicks) the third and last.

Heading down the river proved to be a challenge for some, especially Gal Power who saw it more as a leisurely paddle.

The teams embarked on a four hour paddle down the Orange River.

Thinus Els with a confident and striking pose as they make landfall.

It did not take long for personalities to clash, particularly between Greg Gilowey and Thinus Els, who took offence to being called ‘dude ‘and had to remind Greg that his name was Thinus.

Disagreement over the menu and then some prolonged resistance from Thinus appeared to be the cause before Greg pulled rank and thought he’d resolved the issue.

Regrettably this was not the case as the three course meal they presented flopped… badly.

The Mustard Crusted Fillet Steak they served for the main course was raw, caramelised on the outside and blood flowing on the inside.

This had been Thinus’ responsibility and he very quickly found himself nominated for the elimination challenge along with the Chi Town Braaisters, Frank Dunn and Clare Walker.

Maudie Bleach and Warwick Thomas had led there teams to safety.

Greg Gilowey pulls rank and calls Thinus Els aside for a Captains chat… it did not work and Greg’s team lost the Orange River challenge.

Greg Gilowey is ready to box on Ultimate Braai Master. Best he find another approach as this did not work as he landed himself in an elimination challenge.

The elimination challenge was to prepare a Peri Peri Chicken with the curve ball being that it had to be baked underground.

Thinus Els got what was coming to him after stuffing up the steak (unforgivable) when he served up a Peri Peri Chicken that confused the judges with a host of unnecessary sides covered in sand.

This all proved a little embarrassing for Lekitlane Mokiti who had been quite adamant earlier in the show that he was not going home, a fact that was picked up upon by a few viewers in the twitterverse.

The show has a very distinct Cooked in Africa production feel to it, the laid back, another shit day in Africa style.

They do not build up to a suspense filled climax, everything appears to meander along, much like the Orange River just without the rapids.

Filming Ultimate Braai Master episode one and watching it are two very different events.

They might also want to make the captions legible before running episode two so we can all find out what it is that’s being served to the judges!

The ‘Green Feet Team’ Profile | Ultimate Braai Master

The Green Feet Team is punting a Rainbow Nation vibe on Ultimate Braai Master with Tinus Els and Lekitlane Mokiti teaming up like Mandela and de Klerk.

Braai Master, Tinus Els is a winemaker and his Braai Buddy, Lekitlane Mokiti a restaurateur so the two as a combination have a lot to offer the show, especially if Tinus is able to turn his talents from wine making to witblits while out in the bush on Ultimate Braai Master.

Leki’ says that he likes to run restaurants wherever possible and we are looking forward to see how well he sets up stall in the locations that UBM takes them to on their epic journey across South Africa.

They never for a moment thought they wouldn’t make it through to the final 15, because they have flair, are organised and have great timing.

Lekitlane Mokiti and Tinus Els get caught by the Ultimate Braai Master camera’s while Tinus was trying to sneak in a banana.

Tinus Els said, ” I think it is nice to have a buddy that we can show our culture… braai.”

The Green Feet Team prepared a suckling pig on a rotisserie for their Ultimate Braai Master Cape Town audition.

It was the 10th pig that Tinus has braaied so he was never going to have any problems of his own making but he was concerned that the weather gods may have other idea.

As the clouds began to gather over Cape Town (as they do) he began to worry that he would not have enough time to get everything cooked on time.

It was going to take 3 hours before the 10kg Miss Piggy would be ready.

His decision to go with a small one paid off as they managed to plate up their audition dish to the judges with no problems at all.

This little piggy went to market and then it went to it’s Ultimate Braai Master audition.

Tinus Els gives his little piggy a good basting.

Braai Buddy Lekitlane Mokiti applies the finishing touches, he said “it’s gotta be done one way, just right”.

The Ultimate Braai Master judges made quick work of The Green Feet’s team suckling pig on the spit.

Tinus said that if they win Ultimate Braai Master they would like to start up a braai academy to teach people how easy it is too cook food with just fire and source ingredients from the natural environment around them.

He the wrapped up his day with a beer followed by a good pinotage.

No Facebook or Twitter yet from the Green Feet Team… sorry for you!

The UBM bio for the Green Feet Team says Tinus is most scared of being eliminated from the competition first and Leki really doesn’t want to eat worms.

If they win, they’ll take a percentage of the money for their own personal use and the balance will be invested in a business that they say will be a result of winning the competition.

Ultimate Braai Master Team Announcement

Justin Bonello and Malcom Mycroft announced the final fifteen Ultimate Braai Master Teams on the SABC 3 Expresso Show.

Once the audition process was completed it was time to announce the teams vying for the title of South Africa and the world’s first Ultimate Braai Master.

The GM of Marketing at Pick ‘n Pay (headline sponsors) Malcom Mycroft and the shows host Justin Bonello made the announcement on the Expresso Show.

When the opportunity to get involved came to Pick ‘n Pay, Malcom said it was a “no brainer”.

In South Africa the “culture is about the braai” and the Ultimate Braai Master is about “being South African.”

Gregarious Greg Gilowey of Rust n Dust, cracks Justin Bonello up at the Ultimate Braai Master Sun City auditions.

When asked about the audition experience, Justin Bonello spoke about an incredible insight he had garnered from the auditions.

He said, “If you have a braai master in your group of friends, that person is naturally gregarious, outgoing etcetera and to throw 200 of those people together for a day on the audition round was incredible.”

“The most amazing thing was what South Africa was doing on the braai.”

“There were things that I’ve never seen before in my entire life before.”

“People were building their own braais out of bicycles, windscreen wiper motors.”

There are a number of women putting their hands up for the title of Ultimate Braai Master, with 11 in the final 30 of which 5 are Braai Masters and two ladies only teams.

Justin said, “the perception (is) that only men braai, women do it just as well.”

He went to say that he would like to see a female team in the top 3, if not take the title.

Justin Bonello would love to see a ladies team lift the title. Could the ‘Which Way Braai Chicks’ from Cape Town fit the bill?

The Pick ‘n Pay Wild Card Team, ‘Gal Power’, Sindi Manthata (Braai Master) and Lethu Ncengwa (Braai Buddy) from Gauteng are another female double act who could win Ultimate Braai Master.

The final fifteen who will be gracing South African television screens as they make their epic journey to become the Ultimate Braai Master are:
