Tough day at the office as Sebastian Matroos faces several hurdles and then fails to make it past the final one.

Sebastian Matroos decided that today was the day that he was going to volunteer for team leadership.

Looking back he might well have regretted that decision when one looks at who was in the team.

Roger Harris goes in search of his wooden spoon and disrupts Gal Power at the potjie.

Frank ~~Glum~~ Dunn, he never seems happy.

Ronel Theron had found herself surrounded by some very strong Braai Masters while whoever was to take the reigns of the other team would have to deal with Roger Harris and to an extent Frank Dunn who has also had a couple of confrontations during Ultimate Braai Master but most importantly seldom appears happy.

Despite being fully aware of the challenge that lay ahead with such a big menu Seabastian volunteered saying, “I volunteered but I asked for the backing of the team and everybody’s willing and raring to go.”

He did at times have to step in and help Roger regain his focus asking him to “try and keep it in control” but when you have such a tough job ahead of you that’s not what you need to be wasting time on.

It was no surprise when Sebastian picked Roger and Frank to join him in the elimination challenge.

The elimination challenge that awaited the three was to prepare the perfect lamb chop.

They had to assemble three on a plate for the judges who would then decide their fate.

Hard at work during the Lamb Chop Elimination Challenge, only one of their chops was to make the grade though with the other two letting them down.

Sebastian Matroos and Dumisani Malaza depart Ultimate Braai Master the same way they arrived, with their heads held high and a smile on their faces.

The Chi Town Braaisters and Coal Shoulder were the two teams to continue their journey while Team 2M of Sebastian and Dumisani Malaza would be going home.

Justin Bonello appeared to be holding back the tears, it seems as though each goodbye is beginning to take its toll on the man.

Both Sebastian and his Braai Buddy Dumisani’s parting words were humble and full of grace.

Dumisani said, “I don’t have anything bad or sad to say.”

“I’m happy, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the show.”

“Getting this far has meant a lot to me.”

Sebastian was a lot more philosophical as he got all emotional about the braai saying, “Braaing is not just about the meat on the fire.”

“Braaing is also a primal thing but if you’re busy engaging with the people around you, you are creating a sense of place and a memory wherever you light your fire.”

He believes that the person who can achieve that should win the competition.

Team ’2M’ went Moroccan for their Ultimate Braai Master Sun City audition.

Braai Master, Sebastian Matroos and his Braai Buddy, Dumisani Malaza have been friends for four years and have teamed up to take on the Ultimate Braai Master challenge.

They went for a Moroccan vibe at their Sun City audition.

Sebastian said, “Moroccans are very renowned for cooking outdoors, so today we’re doing a bit of a Moroccan spread for everybody.”

The ’2M’ Moroccan spread included Chicken & Olive Tagine served with couscous, a smoked rack of lamb with mint glaze and a skilpadjie which they prepared Moroccan style successfully fusing two African culinary styles together.

Skilpadjie is traditional South African dish of lamb’s liver wrapped in kidney membrane.

The liver is minced together with chopped coriander, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce and a little seasoning, rolled into balls, wrapped in the membrane and cooked on the braai until crisp.

Team ’2M’ laid on an impressive Moroccan spread at the Sun City Ultimate Braai Master audition which included a Moroccan style skilpadjie.

Sebastian kept a very level head when he heard the good news that they had made it in to the final fifteen of Ultimate Braai Master and is fully aware as to how well they have done to reach the last fifteen.

He said, “Seven thousand wrote in, three hundred people tried out and fifteen called out in the end and we hope to stay there.”

A delighted Dumisani Malaza embraces Ultimate Braai Master host, Justin Bonello when they get the good news. Sebastian, while happy, is a little more circumspect knowing full well that the journey has only just begun.

The good news came as great relief to the two Ultimate Braai Master hopefuls as they had spent their last money to take part in the Sun City audition.

This should sound out as a warning to the other competitors, ’2M’ are not afraid to put it all on the line to follow their dreams.

No Facebook or Twitter yet… hmm!

Perhaps we need a sponsor seeing as they spent the last of their money getting to Sun City… anyone?

The ’2M’ UBM bio says that they are most scared of encountering wild animals during the competition and of not being true to themselves.

They think the weakest team will lack vision, hope, humour, enthusiasm and the spirit of adventure, but admit that at this point any one of their competitors can win the title.

The one thing they’ll miss the most during the trip is solitude and warmth, but if they win Team ’2M’ say they’ll be able to get their lives back on track.

Ultimate Braai Master Team Announcement

Justin Bonello and Malcom Mycroft announced the final fifteen Ultimate Braai Master Teams on the SABC 3 Expresso Show.

Once the audition process was completed it was time to announce the teams vying for the title of South Africa and the world’s first Ultimate Braai Master.

The GM of Marketing at Pick ‘n Pay (headline sponsors) Malcom Mycroft and the shows host Justin Bonello made the announcement on the Expresso Show.

When the opportunity to get involved came to Pick ‘n Pay, Malcom said it was a “no brainer”.

In South Africa the “culture is about the braai” and the Ultimate Braai Master is about “being South African.”

Gregarious Greg Gilowey of Rust n Dust, cracks Justin Bonello up at the Ultimate Braai Master Sun City auditions.

When asked about the audition experience, Justin Bonello spoke about an incredible insight he had garnered from the auditions.

He said, “If you have a braai master in your group of friends, that person is naturally gregarious, outgoing etcetera and to throw 200 of those people together for a day on the audition round was incredible.”

“The most amazing thing was what South Africa was doing on the braai.”

“There were things that I’ve never seen before in my entire life before.”

“People were building their own braais out of bicycles, windscreen wiper motors.”

There are a number of women putting their hands up for the title of Ultimate Braai Master, with 11 in the final 30 of which 5 are Braai Masters and two ladies only teams.

Justin said, “the perception (is) that only men braai, women do it just as well.”

He went to say that he would like to see a female team in the top 3, if not take the title.

Justin Bonello would love to see a ladies team lift the title. Could the ‘Which Way Braai Chicks’ from Cape Town fit the bill?

The Pick ‘n Pay Wild Card Team, ‘Gal Power’, Sindi Manthata (Braai Master) and Lethu Ncengwa (Braai Buddy) from Gauteng are another female double act who could win Ultimate Braai Master.

The final fifteen who will be gracing South African television screens as they make their epic journey to become the Ultimate Braai Master are:
