If there’s one team that’s riding its luck on Ultimate Braai Master it’s the Boerie Brothers who contested their fourth elimination challenge out of five.

It was Collin du Plessis who assumed team leadership for the Gourmet Boerewors and Burger challenge in which they chose the wrong cut of meat (rump) for their boerewors which ultimately sent them into the elimination rounds.

They were thrown a life line with a preliminary challenge at Panyaza in Soweto where the three braai masters of Boerie Brothers, Mojo and Ying Yang were to braai it out with the winner escaping the final elimination challenge.

Tendai “The Beast” Matawarira was a very hungry guest judge for the challenge in which they had to braai for Panyaza’s customers and serve up a platter of food for the judges to rule the roost over.

It was a very hot kitchen to work in and the braai masters were under extreme pressure to produce the perfect plate of food which included steak, chicken and boerewors.

Mojo’s meat was pretty well cooked, the boerie was moist, the chicken perfect

Ying Yang were short on the boerewors and “The Beast” battled with their steak, it was a bit too tough for him… never thought I’d hear that from the man.

Collin’s meat was a bit dry but on the whole he did a good job.

The question however was not which was the worst but which was the best and that honour went to Ashok Naidoo of Mojo with all three judges voting in favour of him.

Boerie Brothers headed into their fourth elimination challenge going up against Ying Yang who have struggled to maintain the pace thus far in the competition battling to find the right balance in their performances.

It was a bit of a drive as they headed south to the Black Mountain Hotel at Thaba Nchu in the Free State where the challenge was to prepare three braai salads; one with butternut, one with beans and the third with pad thai noodles.

Visually the Boerie Brothers impressed Bertus Basson and Marthinus Ferreira said that they had thought their salads through properly.

They presented the judges with an asparagus, corn and honey butternut salad, a mixed veg, honey and noodle salad and a six bean mayo salad which Bertus called a proper broad bean salad.

Ying Yang served up a cashew nut & butternut salad, a pad thai noodle salad and a curry bean salad.

It was the Boerie Brothers who somehow managed to escape elimination once again leaving Shaun and Samantha of Ying Yang to part company with the show leaving 8 teams left in the battle to find South Africa’s Ultimate Braai Master.

Coal Play, along with Good Better Braai and Smoke Sweat & Tears blazed a trail in the Gourmet Burger and Boerewors challenge on Ultimate Braai Master.

It was a very strong team admirably led by Kate George as they produced he best burgers and boerewors of the day.

When it came to picking team members it was Kate who got to pick first and she went straight for Smoke Sweat and Tears as her first choice with Good Better Braai being her next.

The challenge was to braai for 150 people at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways

The Ultimate Braai Masters first assembled at the Pick ‘n Pay flagship store “On Thyme” in Bryanston, Johannesburg where they received a lesson on making boerewors and burger mince.

They then got to enjoy the perfect shopping experience as team members raced around the supermarket filling their trolley with everything they needed for the days challenge.

It was Jonno Proudfoot who was charged with preparing the boerewors and tuna burgers and while he was busy with that task along with Jacques Bester of Good Better Braai the viewers gained insight into the different approach to food that Coal Play bring to the competition when he asked Jacques;

Just smell it, does it smell like… balanced, I need acid, I need smokiness…

Jacques simple response was;

It smells like a pork sausage bru.

They both took turns smelling the sausage…

Back at the Indaba Hotel Kate was in imperious form as she led her team with skill and experience ensuring that everybody knew exactly what they had to do and then let them get on with it.

They presented the judges with a four dishes including a Tuna Burger, the only team on the day to go with a fish burger.

Kate was feeling very confident about what they all put together.

I’m feeling confident and I hope we do well because I think everyone in our team deserves it.

Marthinus loved the J-Lo burger saying it looked amazing and both were delighted with the chilli popper on the side.

Bertus Basson said;

Delicious, I really enjoyed that.

As for the Tuna Burger with Guacamole Marthinus said;

All the right components, guacamole, radishes, peashoots and the little chips, nice and crispy.

Bertus found the pumpkin wors very interesting with all the flavours making sense.
The only drawback was that the wors was dry.

The final dish was a Mielie Boerie Roll with biltong & chakalaka which was very tasty.

The tuna burger was the stand out of the day along with the mielie wors being the best boerie of the day.

It was the Boerie Brothers along with Mojo and Ying Yang that found themselves facing an elimination challenge, the team worked well but they used rump for making their boerewors which Marthinus said was the wrong cut to use.

There was one lifeline for them however, this time there would be a preliminary task which one team would survive and two would go into elimination.

The teams were divided into two groups with last weeks losers assuming the captaincy, Martin Sebelebele of Kasi Guys and Collin du Plessis of Boerie Brothers.

The teams headed out to a very cold and icy Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga where overcoming the cold proved to be a challenge for some including Martin who could not sleep in the tent and despite moving into the car could still not find comfort.

His constant moaning annoyed some of the other contestants with opposing team captain, Collin du Plessis going as far as calling him a “pussy” and a grumpy bear.

The two captains picked their team members with Kasi Guys picking; West Coast Bros, Ying Yang, Smoke Sweat and Tears and Sumting Fresh.

Boerie Brothers picked Spectacular, Good Better Braai, Mojo and Coal Play.

They faced their biggest challenge of the series thus far having to prepare a four course meal for 60 guests; canapes, starters, main course and dessert.

Martin had a problem with his team right from the start or if you take an opposing view, the team had a problem with Martin.

There was a massive communication gap which Martin did not know how to overcome, he claimed his team was not following his instructions properly while from a viewers perspective he appeared to be micro managing everything, dishing out orders more like a corporal than a team leader.

He bleated to Ultimate Braai Master judge Marthinus Ferreira that his team was not doing what they were supposed to do, he was not happy with them at all.

Marthinus’ response was blunt;

You are the team leader so you must take responsibility.

It was chaos with team members not happy with Martin’s leadership style, his constant interfering and micro managing basic tasks, not allowing his team members, all of whom had been doing a lot better than him in the competition so far, to get on with their jobs.

Once they had served all four courses and the judges were giving them their feed back it seemed as though Kasi Guys would be safe when they heard that they’d prepared two of the best dishes of the day, the chilli and the pumpkin fritters, both created by West Coast Bro’s.

That was not to be though as many other components were missing from their dishes meaning Martin had to pick two teams to go into the elimination challenge with him.

In what seemed like a vengeful choice, unrelated to the braai, he picked West Coast Bro’s, the team that prepared the best two dishes of the day.

A furious Hein Gersbach revealed some insight into Martin’s leadership style when he said;

I was busy with the two best dishes of the day and he sent me to fetch a pot for him.

Etienne added;

If his mind is set on something it’s that way or no way

For the elimination challenge which also included Smoke, Sweat and Tears the teams had to prepare three steaks, medium, medium rare and rare.

They had a variety of cuts available in the pantry, one of which was a trap, silver side which should never be used for braaing steak.

Both West Coast Bro’s and Kasi Guys picked silver side for one of their cuts and as a result the judges could bot choose between them as to who was going home.

The two teams had to go into a braai off with Smoke Sweat and Tears surviving their first elimination challenge.

For the aptly named “Inferno” they had to cook a rump steak medium rare and the loser would be going home.

In what can only be described as a justified exit it was Kasi Guys who departed Ultimate Braai Master in their third successive elimination challenge.

Kasi Guys have constantly struggled and the previous days team challenge had been a disaster for Martin driving a wedge between him and many others on the journey.

It’s been coming for a while now as Braai Master Kate George leads “Fresh Coals” to victory in episode three of Ultimate Braai Master.

Initially one didn’t get the feeling it was going to be a good pairing with Andrew Leeuw of Sumting Fresh sharing his concerns with the camera;

We’ve been set up with Coal Play, we just hope that we don’t bump heads in any way.

The two men, Andrew and Jonno, had ample time to bond though as they took up the arduous task of spending the day reeling in tiger fish and it didn’t take long for Andrew to take a leaf out of Coal Play’s book, spinning fishing yarns about his grandfather, a fearless seafaring fisherman.

They shared a boat with The Braaight Brothers & Boerie Brothers where Matt Bronkhorst was the first man out on the dam to catch a tiger fish.

True to form Jonno Proudfoot stepped in to claim responsibility for bringing it in for them.

Don’t let the rest of my team mates hear this but I actually helped Matt land his first one.
I should have just let him suffer on his own.

It took a while before Jonno managed to land one he could finally call his own and save his team from a fourth dish penalty.

He still managed to spin a fishing yarn out of it claiming the next day that it weighed 7.5 kg’s while in reality it was 3.2 kg’s, which in itself is big enough and a magnificent specimen.

Despite the day spent tiger fishing the challenge had nothing to do with tiger fish.

The teams had to use either barbel or tilapia while making three of: fish pie & salad, whole fish & accompaniment, fish cakes & dipping sauce or fish pate & bread except those that incurred a penalty, they had to make all four.

Kate George was the team captain with what appeared to be some remaining resistance from Andrew Leeuw of Sumting Fresh as he qualified his remarks about her;

Kate is our leader, basically we’re following her instructions but we’re all on the same page.

It all worked out for the best with everyone in the team being very proud of what they put together with Andrew in particular glowing in his praise of Kate, although we have to wonder what he might have said if they’d lost and were fighting it out in an elimination battle.

We couldn’t have asked for a better captain.

The judges were impressed with Marthinus Ferreira saying that all the flavours were just unbelievable.

You did a marvellous job, you used the pantry really well, your presentation was phenomenal.
However you seasoning on your fish was lacking and I think there was a bit too much happening on your main fish.
So just think of that going forward.

The judges do appear to try hard to find something wrong at times and it’s not always convincing.

It was the best of the day and Coal Play finally lived up to their billing as Ultimate Braai Master favourites while Sumting Fresh who have not shined yet might yet prove they have what it takes bringing their “A Game” to this team challenge even though it was under the leadership of Kate George.

The worst teams of the day were The Braaight Brothers with the Boerie Brothers and Kasi Guys with Huiskombuis Boys, they went into the elimination rounds and two left Ultimate Braai Master.

Everything started off well for the Braaight Brothers and Boerie Brothers in the Jozini Dam challenge.

Matt Bronkhorst caught the first fish of the day and saved his team from having to prepare a fourth dish in the fresh water challenge.

The good start continued into the cooking too where Bertus Basson was impressed with their organization.

Tomas was optimistic about their chances when they served up the food;

I think the judges should be happy, I think they’ll enjoy it and they should pick us as a top team.

He could not have got it more wrong with the fish being undercooked to the point that it was raw.

Marthinus Ferreira was not impressed;

Inexcusable for two hours to have that served raw.

They served up the worst fish cakes and the whole fish was raw on the bone sending them straight into the elimination challenge.

For the Boerie Brothers this was the third time in a row they have had to endure the pain of an elimination challenge, of all the teams on Ultimate Braai Master they are riding their luck the most.

The third instalment of Ultimate Braai Master served up the most shocking eliminations yet as The Braaight Brothers and Huiskombuis Boys found themselves in an elimination round and then on the way home.

The two teams had impressed the judges at each stage of the competition so far and seemed destined for the top six.

Instead they found themselves floundering on the shores of Jozini Dam, on the border of South Africa and Swaziland, as the brutal nature of this years Ultimate Braai Master continued.

The challenge started with the braai teams being split up into six groups of two with Justin Bonello dictating who was to be paired up with each other.

Huiskombuis Boys found themselves partnered with Kasi Guys, who had competed in the episode two elimination round and survived, while The Braaight Brothers were paired with the Boerie Brothers who had fought for survival in both the previous episodes elimination rounds.

The challenge began with two from each team heading out on to the dam to go tiger fishing with penalties incurred for those teams that did not catch any tiger fish.

Those that did would only have to cook three dishes in the allotted time while those who did not would have to cook four dishes.

The fishing was a breeze for The Braaight Boerie Brothers, with Daniel and Matt representing the team out on Jozini dam, catching the first fish of the day with some help from Jonno Proudfoot according to the Coal Play braai buddy.

Back on shore they were given the task which was to prepare three dishes using Barbel or Tipalia, both fresh water fish.

They had a choice of fish pie, whole fish, fish cakes or fish pate, those teams that hadn’t caught a tiger fish had to prepare all four.

The Boerie Braaight Brothers got of to a good start impressing Bertus Basson with their organization but it all fell apart when it came to tasting their food.

Kasi Guys were not as confident about their meal with Martin admitting that they’d had some setbacks with the fish and the fish pie, they were correct as the judges picked them as one of the worse teams of the day.

It was the merger of Coal Play and Sumting Fresh that produced the most outstanding braai of the round.

The elimination challenge was to prepare breakfast on a spade which was to be their grid, their pan and plate, everything they cooked had to be cooked and served on the spade and they had 45 minutes in which to finish the challenge.

The key to this challenge according to Justin Bonello was;

If they just understand that it’s no different to a pan or a griddle they’ll get it right.

The Braaight Brothers got Bertus Basson all excited when they told him they were doing a cannelini bean and sausage casserole, he likes a one pot breakfast.

But when it came to delivering it all tasted like boerewors.

Bertus was dismissive of Kasi Guys who opted for a mixed grill with candied bacon;

They’ve given us big talk before but no delivery before so I hope today they deliver on what they promise.

Deliver they did with Bertus satisfied saying;

I could eat more of that.

Huiskombuis Boys entered the fray with a tin cup omelette with mushroom and a meat kebab which impressed the judges until they tasted it.

Marthinus Ferreira sighed;

Oh dear, I think we’ve got a bit of a problem… raw sausage.

They liked the idea but it was poorly executed.

Boerie Brothers wanted to keep it simple and stuck to what they knew, serving up a French toast mixed grill.

Bertus liked the visual flavour and it seemed to taste as good too.

The judges were comfortable they knew who the worst team was but finding a second to go out with them took some deliberation.

Justin Bonello wasted no time in handing out the bad news to the Braaight Brothers who always gave the impression they would go far in the competition.

Kasi Guys produced the best spade breakfast of the morning and they were safe along with the Boerie Brothers who had now survived their third elimination challenge in a row.

It was Huiskombuis Boys, who served raw sausage and raw steak to the judges, who made a surprise exit along with The Braaight Brothers.

There was still time for a couple of MasterChef SA moments on Ultimate Braai Master as Tomas Cunnama and Rudy Gibbons were reduced to tears with Rudy having the final say;

Team Spectacular showed in episode two that they have one goal, to win Ultimate Braai Master.

Braai Master, Nonkululeko Zondo, returned from the mornings fishing with the biggest catch of the day earning Team Spectacular direct passage through to the next round.

It was an exhilarating experience for the girl from Johannesburg who had never fished before.

Team Spectacular are, in some ways, reminiscent of last years Gal Power for whom every round brought with it something new and they tackle it with the same optimism and vigour.

Nono’s determination shone through when she requested they be allowed to cook the fish in a competitive environment.

Every second on the braai counts, everything that you learn, especially when working with ingredients you may not have cooked with before, will be of use to you later in the competition.

Without any risk of elimination they served up a meal to be proud of.

Bertus Basson rightly said;

You know what I’m really enjoying is very rapid skills development.
You know, they listen, they take it in and they make it their own.
It’s really cool to see.

They’re an absolute delight to watch, always smiling and always bringing a simmering energy to what they do.

Team Spectacular are in it to win it reeling in the biggest fish of the day first appeared first on Gourmet Guys

Coal Play are one of the favourites for Ultimate Braai Master for a good reason, the team consists of two very talented and knowledgeable cooks.

Kate George is a caterer and Jonno Proudfoot is a food consultant, together they make a formidable partnership.

As such the bar is raised significantly higher, coming last in a challenge is not an option, only winning is.

The day got off to a bad start for Braai Master Kate George as in true fisherman fashion she returned with the biggest yarn about the one that got away while fellow first time fishermen Team Spectacular managed to reel the biggest of the day in.

While trying to reel it in she said;

It feels so heavy I’m hoping it’s the biggest fish in the world

Unfortunately she lost it and what followed was a story as big as the fish itself, something about lines crossing and losing the lures, all far to technical for me.

Which weighed 100kg’s at least!

Blaming it on the Panda simply won’t work either.

I find the T-Shirts worn by the Ultimate Braai Masters for this challenge the oddest choice of all.

The Panda has got to be, in evolutionary terms, one of the dumbest of all, it could not lead a bee to honey if it tried.

Any animal that decides a switch of diet exclusively to bamboo is a good thing, which means it has to spend it’s life eating bamboo 24 hours a day to survive, losing its libido in the process, deserves to die out.

There is no point trying to save an animal that refuses to have sex to produce any offspring.

Because Kate returned without a fish, along with fellow competition front runners Good Better Braai, she incurred a 10 minute time penalty for her failure.

Undeterred they got to work at double the pace producing a dish worthy of an Ultimate Braai Master with Jonno pumped up for the challenge running around getting his prep work done for Braai Master Kate George.

Marthinus Ferreira said;

I must just say this looks beautiful

Bertus Basson did find something wrong with it however, complaining about the chilli;

Well cooked food and flavours, just too much chilli.

They were competing in a tough group with both Bertus and Marthinus agreeing that it was their favourite.

It was Boerie Brothers and Berry Bright Food Fanatics who could not keep up and went through to the elimination round.

Coal Play were safe and have another opportunity to up their braai another notch.

Smoke Sweat and Tears were ambitious in there choice of dish for the Ultimate Braai Master SASSI challenge but did enough to see them through to the next round.

They went with a garlic mash which raised eyebrows from judge Bertus Basson questioning if they had enough time, only 45 minutes, to get it done.

They served the judges marinated tuna with a citrus salad for the raw dish and tuna cutlets on garlic mash for cooked.

Those raised eyebrows certainly spurred Chris Kastern and Simon Good on to get everything done on time.

Bertus Basson was quite straightforward in his assessment.

Although it’s ugly, it’s tasty… very cool.

With that they were through to the next round.

It as a tough days fishing for Shaun Cavanagh as he returned to shore without reeling in a SASSI Green List Tuna and incurred a ten minute cooking time penalty.

The Braai Masters had earlier in the day headed out to sea to catch tuna, one of the species found on the SASSI Green List. Team Spectacular caught the biggest fish of the day and earned safe passage through to the next episode of Ultimate Braai Master.

As for Ying Yang while they were allowed to head for the pantry with the rest of the teams in their group they were not allowed to start prepping until the 10 minute time penalty had lapsed.

This all seemed to work in Ying Yang’s favour as in the previous challenge they had battled with their organisation and time keeping, it would appear that stripping a few minutes off their allocated time gets them into gear leaving them less time to start faffing around.

They plated you with a fish curry and a sesame seed tuna with their very own Ying Yang sauce.

Bertus Basson liked the flavour but was disappointed that they did not show the fish off better.

This time round they received no special mentions good or bad at judgement time, the best team from the group was West Coast Bros and they received all the plaudit while the two teams that headed into the elimination round were Kasi Guys and eventual losers Quince Cooks.

Sumting Fresh did not have the best of days on Ultimate Braai Master.

They were adventurous in their menu with marinated seared tuna steaks and a tuna mayonnaise but it still did not seem to come together.

Despite mixing together an exciting array of ingredients for the marinade the meal was bland and the tuna was over cooked which upset Marthinus Ferreira.

It was a close call for Andrew Leeuw, fortunately for him others in the group were worse.

The West Coast Bros were the clear winners of their group in the second episode of Ultimate Braai Master.

Commercial fisherman Etienne Gersbach had no problem out at sea bringing home the tuna for brother and Braai Buddy Hein Gersbach to fillet in preparation of their Filipino inspired seared tuna, pineapple and pepper kebab and tuna salad.

Etienne has worked on a lot of different fishing ships many of which have Filipino crews and when it comes to cooking he said he’s learned a lot from them.

Bertus Basson was glowing in his praise saying;

They showed that it can be done.

Two really simple dishes in 45 minutes is all we actually needed.

What must really have turned the other contestants heads is that they finished with time to spare, spending the last few minutes chilling out, toasting one other with Coca Cola.

West Coast Bros are very entertaining to watch too, they have a unique quirkiness about them enhanced by a special brotherly bond.

In episode one they celebrated their success with a Borat style “high five” and attempted another, although this time round it didn’t quite come off with Etienne missing the contact point and his hand landed on Hein’s chest. Hein was the first to react converting the movement into a hug.

As a special reward for winning the groups round robin stage the two brothers got to spend the next morning scuba diving while Quince Cooks, Kasi Guys, Berry Bright Food Fanatics and Boerie Brothers battled it out in the elimination challenge and the rest of the teams went snorkelling on the reef.

The Braaight Brothers continue to impress on Ultimate Braai Master.

In episode one they wowed the judges with their sausage and now they presented the judges with tuna cutlets on stir fry with crispy capers and orange butter sauce for cooked and tuna sashimi with cucumber, fennel and radish pickle for uncooked.

Bertus Basson said;

As a complete mouthful it’s delicious

Marthinus Ferreira also liked it saying that all the flavours came through and tasted really good together.

They were not the best of the group though, that recognition went to West Coast Bros while Kasi Guys and Quince Cooks headed off to the elimination challenge.

Berry Bright Food Fanatcs failed to live up to their name on Ultimate Braai Master.

The daughter and mother team of Nicole Buirman and Suzanne Nel followed up their poor #UBM S2 E1 performance with even worse in Sodwana Bay.

Nicole knew it was going to be tough hoping that she would be the one to catch the biggest tuna out on the boats and win a free passage to #UBM S2 E3. That really was the only way they were going to make it through.

The challenge was to cook a raw and cooked tuna dish and Braai Buddy Suzanne Nel got the team off to a good start by doing a good job filleting the SASSI Green List fish but it began to fall apart with their poor and limited choice of ingredients from the Pick ‘n Pay pantry.

They presented the judges with seared tuna steaks with mustard mayo, feta salad and tuna & feta skewers.

Bertus Basson quickly picked them out for having feta in both dishes asking if it was on purpose, which it was.

Marthinus Ferreira commented that if it wasn’t for the dressing it would have been very bland.

What made it even more difficult for the Berry Bright Food Fanatics is that they were competing in a strong group and quickly found themselves in an elimination round along with Boerie Brothers, Kasi Guys and Quince Cooks.

The two women were very optimistic about their chances believing that they would be good enough to see off the competition but they were in trouble straight from the off with very little happening while the rest were storming ahead.

Not only did they make a bizarre choice of dish to present to the 60 guests at the elimination challenge, Nicole was all at sea again as confusion reigned and Suzanne had to take a medical break to attend to a cut finger.

They made a salad, roosterkoek and what has to be one of the most bizarre dishes ever made on a cooking show, sweet curry paella.

While Bertus Basson called it a new dish he could only congratulate them for completing it on time and when that’s the only complement you get you should go and start packing.

Their Ultimate Braai master journey came to an early end and I for one am delighted.

Not because of the food they cooked or because of them but if I had to see one more shot of them standing there with that stupid “Dolly” tucked under an arm one more time I would scream and throw the nearest inanimate object I could lay my hands on at the TV screen.

Boerie Brothers Collin du Plessis and Matt Bronkhorst had to endure a second elimination challenge in as many episodes making it two from two following in the footsteps of Rust ‘n Dust from Ultimate Braai Master season one.

Out at sea Collin made quick work of reeling in his tuna and was generous enough to keep fishing just in case Mojo, who was on the boat with him, failed to land a fish and he would have an extra one for him.

Funnily enough that is exactly what happened and Colin saved Mojo from a potential 10 minute penalty for returning without any fish.

The life partners went into the challenge foused and full of intent to do better than they did at Hluhluwe and not end up in another elimintion challenge.

They plated up with and avo & cucumber tuna rolls and seared tuna with dill mash.

For Bertus only half the plate worked the seared tuna with dill mash.

The plate reminded Marthinus Ferreira of someone who was trying to hard and failed.

While Kyle and Rudy of Huiskombuis Boys were the best team of the group the Boerie Brothers were one of the worst… again and they joined Berry Bright Food Fanatics, Kasi Guys and Quince Cooks in the elimination round.

They did enough to survive a second elimination challenge with a mussel pot which impressed Bertus.

It’s actually quite nice, you can at a whole bowl of these mussels with that rice.

The chorizo really worked with the spice coming through.

Boeris Brothers worked with a plan in the elimination challenge taking their key ingredient, mussels and made them shine.

They along with the best team of the elimination round, Kasi Guys survived while Quince Cooks and Berry Bright Food Fanatics said goodbye.

Kasi Guys stumbled badly on Ultimate Braai Master in the tuna challenge but pulled it all together to storm through the elimination challenge.

Kasi Guys Braai Master, Martin Sebelebele was, along with Ying Yang, one of the unlucky ones not to catch a fish and as a result the team faced a 10 minute time penalty for the challenge.

They did not respond well to this and only managed to present one dish to the Ultimate Braai Master judges of which the only thing that appealed to Bertus Basson was the spinach.

In the elimination challenge they were up against Boerie Brothers, Quince Cooks and Berry Bright Food Fanatics, of the four of them Kasi Guys shone.

The prepared a crab broth for the 60 guests with a sweet basil pesto flat bread and a toasted chestnut salad.

Bertus Basson only needed one word to describe it;

Delicious

While Marthinus Ferreira added;

Very good.
After the rain we had today I can imagine eating a whole bowl of that.

They showed off their primary ingredients, crab, brilliantly and for that continued their Ultimate Braai Master journey while for Berry Bright Food Fanatics and Quince Cooks it was the end of the road.

Two teams left Ultimate Braai Master in episode two leaving everyone in no doubt as to the severity of the challenges and exactly how quickly it can all come to an end.

In the first episode it was Darkies Unleashed who made a quick exit and in episode two it was Berry Bright Food Fanatics and Quince Cooks who followed them in quick succession.

The challenge began with a mornings fishing as the teams set out to catch SASSI Green List Tuna for the challenge that lay ahead later that day.

There was a reward on offer for the Braai Master that caught the biggest fish, that team would advance straight through to #UBM S2 E3 although no mention was made of passing go and collecting R200.

Quite miraculously it was Team Spectacular who won that honour having never fished in their lives before which pretty much goes to prove how little skill is involved in catching a fish, simply throw the line in and wait to get lucky.

The prize for the biggest fish that got away went to Coal Play, this time it was Kate George bigging it all up after Jonno Proudfoot had had a go in episode one.

While the Braai Masters were all at sea trying to catch a SASSI Green List Tuna the Braai Buddy’s remained on shore to receive a tutorial from Bertus Basson on how to fillet a fish. It was to be the Braai Buddies responsibility to do the filleting once the Braai Masters had returned.

Quince Cooks’ Quenten Alberts is a commercial fisherman and was well up for the challenge.

He was confident they would make it through comfortably even though it was the fist time he was fishing on the Northern Natal coastline.

But catching a fish and cooking a fish are two different things entirely and at times one felt as though it was the first time that the two had cooked fish before.

When it came to the actual task Quenten looked and sounded as nervous as he did in the last challenge and the early misplaced confidence retreated into a male chauvinist rant about women as he quickly began to shift the blame on to his Braai Buddy and wife, Sandy Alberts, as she battled to fillet the fish.

She’s murdering that poor fish.

It’s actually heartbreaking to see what a woman can do to a fish.

They finally plated up with a coconut milk tuna kebab, seared tuna and tuna stomach & heart accompanied by a citrus salad.

Marthinus Ferreira very quickly picked Quenten out for not following the brief which was for two tuna dishes, one cooked and one raw.

You gave us 1..2..3..4 dishes.

It’s very important to listen to the brief.

and as for the food he said;

It all promised so much but delivered so little.

Bertus Basson called it an over promise and under deliver dish.

The elimination challenge was contested by Quince Cooks, Berry Bright Food Fanatics, Kasi Guys and Boerie Brothers who had featured in the #UBM S2 E1 elimination challenge making it two for two.

The four teams had to prepare one dish with a side and some bread to feed 60 guests.

Quenten vowed to follow the brief closely coming up with a calamari chowder and cornbread.

While he felt that his chowder had come out well the judges thought otherwise.

Marthinus said that the seasoning was completely flat while for Bertus the best part of the meal was the crispy corn bread crust.

The only positive Marthinus could come up with was that they finished on time.

Quince Cooks were comfortably out braaied by Kasi Guys and Boerie Brothers which meant they were on their way home with Berry Bright Food Fanatics, the mother and daughter pairing whose brief Ultimate Braai Master adventure was rather uninspiring.

Quenten Alberts male chauvinist outburst as wife butchers the fish on Ultimate Braai Master first appeared first on Gourmet Guys

This years Pick ‘n Pay Wild Card pick, Darkies Unleashed did not do as well as last years Gal Power who made it all the way to the Top 5 of Ultimate Braai Master.

They did not have a good day in the round robin challenge and fared even worse with the traditional African meal elimination challenge seeing Team Spectacular and Boerie Brothers out braai them when it counted.

In an interview with You Magazine they revealed that their biggest fear was going home first but emotionally they were up against it as Braai Buddy Motebejane’s mother-in law had passed away the night they arrived at the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

They had to deal with the emotions of either staying in the competition or going home so Motebejane could support his wife and family.

At the end of the day the judges made that decision for them in what must have been a close contest with Boerie Brothers, perhaps that emotional need was taken into consideration.

Coal Play may have a big problem facing them on Ultimate Braai Master, over confidence.

Kate George, a caterer and Jonno Proudfoot, a food consultant are culinary professionals and while this will give them a distinct culinary advantage over many of their rivals for the Ultimate Braai Master title, cooking within a time constraint with all the pressure that comes with it presents a very different type of challenge.

They not only have to beat the other teams but they also have to beat the confidence that their experience gives them as it could well be their downfall.

At the welcome dinner Jonno was overheard saying;

We can do this no problem.

When Justin Bonello picked them out for this at the start of the days challenge it was Braai Master Kate George who stepped in to quell any anger that Jonno might have stirred with their rivals.

I was totally embarrassed by my braai buddy here.

There is no doubting they have the knowledge but to deliver on the day is a whole different story.

On this the first day of Ultimate Braai Master they delivered but more importantly became acutely aware that their over confidence could be a problem.

Kate said;

You see these things done so effortlessly and you think I can do that, actually it’s not so easy.

Coal Play planned to plate up with the beetroot medley which was Kate’s favourite and the white bean soup.

They were forced to admit overconfidence as time ran out to cook the beetroot so Kate used her experience and knowledge to switch the dish to a fresh beetroot and strawberry jelly while Jonno repented.

They plated up with the white bean soup, Springbok loin and beetroot medley jelly.

The judges loved it with Marthinus summing the effort up with;

Everything tastes clean and beautiful… stunning.

Coal Play were one of the best teams out there and were Bertus Basson’s highlight team of the round while Marthinus went with Mojo.

They pulled it back from the brink leaving team Spectacular to go into the elimination round while they found safety with Mojo, Quince Cooks, and Good Better Braai.
